Important change to the M&S Loyalty points

You may have heard about a new piece of European Union (EU) legislation, which came into effect in December 2015, and affects all credit and debit card providers in the UK. It means that banks and credit card companies are reviewing their loyalty schemes and what they can offer on their credit card products.

We have consequently reviewed the M&S Loyalty scheme in light of this legislation. There will be a change to the points you earn outside of M&S with your M&S Credit Card; from 29 February you will receive one point for every £5 you spend. This is explained in the table below.

We’re pleased to be able to keep the points you earn in M&S the same; you will continue to receive one point for every £1 you spend in-store and online at M&S.

Current level of loyalty points New level of loyalty points
Effective from February 29 2016
Using your M&S Card within M&S both in store and online 1 point for every £1 spent 1 point for every £1 spent (no change)
Using your M&S Credit Card outside of M&S 1 point for every £2 spent 1 point for every £5 spent

If you have an M&S Credit Card with either M&S Premium Club* or a Premium Current Account you will continue to earn triple points on your shopping in-store and online at M&S.

Helpful questions and answers

Why are you making a change to the loyalty scheme?

New European Union legislation which came into effect in December 2015, reduced the income paid by businesses to banks every time a credit card is used. This historically contributed to the running of customer accounts. Consequently banks and credit card companies are reviewing their loyalty schemes and what they can offer on their credit card products.

We have tried to minimise the changes to the loyalty scheme as a result of the industry changes as much as possible and the full impact has not been passed on to our customers.

Does this change only impact the M&S Credit Card?

Yes, as we are not changing the loyalty points earned whilst shopping in-store and online at M&S, therefore if you have an M&S Debit Card, Charge Card* or Budget Card* there is no change to your loyalty points.

When does this change take place?

The change to the points on your spend outside of M&S will come into effect from 29 February 2016. You don't need to do anything as this change will happen automatically.

Please remember, the number of points you can collect in store and online at M&S will remain exactly the same. The total number of points you have previously accumulated will also remain unaffected by this change.

How many points will I earn when I use my M&S Credit Card from the 29 February 2016?

You will earn one point per £1 on spending in M&S and one point per £5 when you spend outside of M&S.

What happens to the points I have already earned?

There is no change to any points you have already earned, these will be converted into M&S vouchers and sent in your quarterly mailings as usual.

Are the vouchers I haven't yet spent still worth the same?

Yes, any vouchers you have received, still hold the same value. Points will still be converted into vouchers in the same way, it is the rate at which you earn the points which is changing.

When will I see the difference?

Your next reward mailing in May will incorporate the changes.
