M&S current account support

Arranged overdrafts are there if you need a little extra money to tide you over every now and then. You shouldn't use an arranged overdraft for long-term borrowing. So, when you're overdrawn, you should make regular payments into your account.

If a change in your circumstances means you're unable to make regular payments it's important you contact us as soon as you recognise you're in difficulty, so we can work with you to understand your current financial situation and find an appropriate solution.

Find out more about M&S current account support

Temporary overdraft support ended on 31 October 2020. If you have temporary overdraft support in place, please follow the information in the correspondence we sent you regarding this support to see other help that is available. If you haven’t previously had support but you’re struggling with your overdraft, please visit our Financial Support page.

How does our overdraft compare?

You can compare our overdrafts with other ways of borrowing by looking at the annual percentage rate (APR). APR is the cost of borrowing over a year and lets you compare the costs with other credit products.

No interest-free amount applies to Additional Accounts.

Before you apply

Overdrafts

An overdraft lets you borrow money on your current account. An arranged overdraft is where we agree a limit with you. Overdrafts are not suitable for long term lending and usually result in interest and other fees. You can ask us to reduce or remove your arranged overdraft limit at any time by phone or in branch. If you remove your overdraft you’ll have to repay any overdrawn amount and any interest owed.

Our overdraft eligibility tool allows you to check the overdraft amount you may be eligible for before you apply. Our overdraft calculator will help you understand the costs of borrowing using an M&S current account overdraft.

An unarranged overdraft is when your account goes overdrawn and you don’t have an arranged overdraft or you go over your arranged limit. An unarranged overdraft may adversely affect your credit rating. We may decline payments that you try to make using an unarranged overdraft.

To help you avoid overdraft charges, we will send you overdraft text alerts if you are due to enter into your arranged overdraft limit or an unarranged overdraft and what action you can take to avoid charges.

If you don’t provide your mobile number, or let us know when you’ve changed it, we wont be able to send you text alerts to make you aware of your overdraft usage and help you avoid any unnecessary overdraft charges.

You can opt out of these texts at any time by phone or by going into an M&S Bank branch.

Important overdraft information

Please read the following information:

Overdraft facilities at account opening

You can request an arranged overdraft to come with your new account (subject to status). The first £250 will be interest free and there are no additional overdraft fees. Arranged overdraft interest is charged at 39.9% EAR variable on all balances above £250. In addition if you have an arranged overdraft limit and provide us with your mobile number we will send you overdraft text alerts, so you’ll know where you are in relation to your overdraft limit. You can opt out of these alerts at any time, by calling us or visiting us in branch. You can request a different arranged overdraft limit at any time (subject to status) or choose not to have one.

Representative example: 0% EAR variable on the first £250, 39.9% EAR variable on anything above that, giving a representative rate of 30.5% APR variable (assumed arranged overdraft £1,200).
