How to verify a transaction within Internet Banking

When using Internet Banking, we'll ask all our current account customers to verify new payees, and certain payments, by generating a security code using their M&S PASS.

This is a security step that verifies your credentials. It also increases security against possible fraud attacks which can potentially be caused by malware.

Steps to generate a transaction code if you use a Digital M&S PASS:

  • Step one: Open the M&S Banking App, and select 'generate security code' and then 'Transaction verification code'.
  • Step two: Enter the last 4 digits of the account number/company reference or credit card number, ignoring any letters or special characters.
  • Step three: Then input the whole payment amount including pence, ignoring the decimal point.
    e.g. £245.67 should be input as 24567
  • Step four: Then use fingerprint, face or your Digital M&S PIN to generate your transaction code.
  • Step five: Enter the 6-digit transaction code in Internet Banking and select continue to complete your payment.

Before you start, you'll need to have your smartphone or tablet to hand so that you can access the M&S Banking App.

First, make sure you're signed into M&S Internet Banking. On the 'My Accounts' screen, please click into your M&S Current Account.

The next screen shows you a summary of your account details. Go to the list on the left-hand side of the screen and click 'Send Money' and select 'To Someone Else' from the list that drops down below.

Next, select from the list of existing payees or select from one of the options under 'Create a new payee'.

On the 'Send money to another account' screen, once you've filled in the details as requested, if you're creating a new payee, you'll need to generate a transaction code using your Digital M&S PASS.

To do this, launch the M&S Banking App on your smartphone or tablet and select 'Generate a security code', and then 'Transaction verification code'.

On the next screen, enter the last four digits of the payee's reference or account number followed by the payment amount, including pence.

Now select 'Authorise' and use face or fingerprint recognition, if you have this set up. Alternatively, enter your 6-digit M&S PASS PIN. A 6-digit transaction code will be displayed.

Enter this code in the boxes at the bottom of the screen.

Finally, click 'Continue' and you will see a summary of the transaction. If all the details are correct, click 'Send Money' and you'll receive confirmation it's been sent with the option to print a copy.

Please note, once you've completed these steps and successfully made your first payment, you'll only be asked to verify the payment with a transaction code periodically.

If you don't know what to use as a reference please contact the company you are paying.

I've typed in the digits on my M&S PASS wrong, how do I go back and change them?

To delete digits that have been input incorrectly on your M&S PASS, simply press the green button to delete the last digit that was input. You can also press and hold the green button to completely clear the display.

Note: the display on your physical M&S PASS can only show up to 8 numbers at a time, you can input more than 8 numbers but they will start dropping off to the left of the display. This will be indicated by a small arrow on the left.
